WHAT IS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?

A social enterprise is an organisation that uses commercial operations to improve social, well-being and environmental aspects within our society/communities. Social enterprises are structured as a non-for profit entity.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHANGEMAKER?

One who desires change in the world and, by gathering knowledge and resources, makes that change happen.

WHAT DOES PLACEMAKING MEAN?

Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to design, planning and management of public spaces to promote people’s health, happiness, and well-being.

WHAT DOES SOCIAL DESIGN MEAN?

Social design is the application of design methodologies to tackle complex human issues, placing the social issues as the priority. Designer’s role is to take this into account and take on the responsibility in society through the design process to bring about social change.

DO I NEED ANY EXPERIENCE OR QUALIFICATIONS?

No, our trained team will provide you with all of the training and expertise you need when you join a program.

ARE THERE ANY AGE RESTRICTIONS?

No! The typical age range is from there is no age is from 18 – 55+, but if you are older and want to experience new cultures and give back, then we welcome you with open arms.

IS THERE ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE?

Unfortunately not. Financial assistance is not available as our programme fees provide vital funding to our projects and surrounding communities.

CAN I STILL APPLY IF I AM NOT FROM THE UK?

Absolutely! We accept many overseas. At Wakeup Campaign, our staff are fully trained to guide you through the process of application.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK?

Book as early as possible, 8- 12moths in advance to guarantee availability.

CAN I COME WITH FRIENDS IN A GROUP OR GO IN A COUPLE?

Yes. Couples and friends are welcome, dependent on availability and the size of the group. We however cannot always guarantee private accommodation.

IS THERE A SELECTION PROCESS TO BE AWARE OF?

Yes, a completed application form is required. Information such as:

  • Chosen program
  • Date you would like to do the program
  • Age
  • Nationality
  • Country of residence
  • Reason for wanting to do a volunteer program (no more than 700 words)
  • Contact details (full name, email address and telephone number)

CAN I TRAVEL BEFORE AND AFTER?

Yes, you definitely can! Many volunteers arrive early to start exploring.

HOW OLD ARE WAKEUP CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEERS?

The minimum age is 18, and there is no maximum. We will be more than happy to talk through the ages of those booked onto programmes, internship or project you are interested in…Feel free to contact us!

HOW DO I KNOW YOU ARE REPUTABLE?

Wakeup Campaign was formed 10 years ago by Viviane Williams, the founder of the social enterprise. When Viviane was 23 years old, she did travelling in West Africa, embarking on doing development work in Ghana and since then she’s been striving for positive, social reform through design and that how Wakeup Campaign was created. Its eveolved from producing a variety of pop up shops in London (Brixton Village Market, BoxPark) to teaming up with her former supervisor when she was in Ghana to expand this to a outreach, volunteer enterprise. Wakeup Campaign has had various awards from:

  • Awarded at Deloitte Pitch – Showcasing Wakeup Campaign for the 02 Think Bigger Award, November 2011
  • Awarded at the House of Lords – Top 100 UK Future Leaders by Powerful Media & Striding Out, August 2010 and 2011

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We have a clear detailed costing structure within our programme pack, please take a look!

ARE THERE ANY EXTRA COSTS?

What the programs don’t include are:

  • Visas
  • Passports
  • Flight cost
  • Medical bill(s)
  • Free Time
  • Expenses
  • Personal Items
  • Personal Expenses (dinners out, laundry, etc.)

As a rough guide, we recommend around £250-300 a month for spending money on all our programs.

HOW CAN I PAY?

Payments for Wakeup Campaign programmes are made in full at the time of booking. There is an option to pay in instalments. We are happy to talk through the options with you.

CAN I FUNDRAISE FOR MY PROGRAMME EXPEDITION?

Yes of course! With prior planning and hard work you can raise all the money for your chosen program. If you would like fundraising advice, feel free to get in contact with us, we will be more than happy to help.

CAN YOU ARRANGE MY FLIGHTS?

We recommend in flight comparison and airline direct web pages online to get the best flight price for you.

DO I NEED INSURANCE?

Absolutely, this is an essential part of your programme, placement, sabbatical etc. You will not be allowed to join unless you have fully comprehensive insurance.

DO I NEED A VISA?

As our projects are currently residing in Ghana, West Africa, you will need a visa.

WILL I BE MET AT THE AIRPORT?

On most programs you will be met by Wakeup Campaign’s programme director, Knox Odumah.

WHAT SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE CAN I EXPECT TO GET?

The absolute very best! We pride ourselves on our local expert knowledge and network.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

Accommodation is respectful, clean and welcoming. Feel free to view the accommodation here.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

The food will be nutritious and healthy throughout your stay. You will be able to enjoy the rich, tasty, vibrant Ghanaian cuisine.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?

If you have any specific concerns we would encourage you to contact us detailing what these are.

DO I NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT FOR ANY OF THE PROGRAMS?

Most locations require a moderate level of fitness.

WILL I HAVE ANY FREE TIME?

Yes. We always try to allow some time off to embrace and soak up the rich West African culture.

HOW DOES WAKEUP CAMPAIGN MAKE SURE I AM SAFE WHILE I AM IN THE FIELD?

The health and safety of all Wakeup Campaign volunteers is paramount. All of our volunteers and staff receive a full orientation, and have access to a 24-hour emergency support system.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY?

Wakeup Campaign staff and field representatives are fully trained to deal with any type of emergency and all our projects are linked with. In case of an emergency we would link up with field members to arrange local medical treatment or air evacuation.

ARE THERE ANY MEDICAL RESTRICTIONS?

All volunteers will need a sign off any medical conditions from a qualified GP/Doctor so we can ensure the safety of all volunteers.
