We Believe In Positive Change
1. What’s your background? What did you study?
Over the last decade, I have had the opportunity to be involved at various levels within the volunteering field in Africa and Canada, advocating on various global issues and more importantly working with young people to both educate them as the future leaders and giving them the platform to make a change now.
I was able to assist in this journey as a project supervisor on a UK Government-sponsored programme called PLATFORM 2 (a consortium between Christian Aid and DFID). These projects have included improving the lives of those in destitute communities to empower the youth; organising forums, workshops and embarking on a range of development projects in the communities; and raising awareness on a number of global issues. This passion influenced my decision to study Common Wealth Youth Development Studies at the University Of Ghana and BSC in Integrated Development Studies at the Evangelical Presbyterian University College, Ho.
2. Where are you from?
I am from Baglo Buem in the Volta Region.
3. What attracted you to do volunteer work?
I strongly believe we should all be the change we want to see in the world. Through this mantra, I decided to pursue social work within my career in order to provide a helping hand to the vulnerable as I am passionate about making a difference. I truly love my decade of volunteer work experience as it allows me to continue fulfilling this desire. This drive and passion is something that fuels me that we are all Global Citizens and we have to be the change we want to see in the world
4. What gets you inspired?
I think of myself as a Global Citizen. My inspiration is working with grassroots to empower them to learn how to fish.
5. Why did you establish Volta Home Away from home?
I establish Volta Home Away from Home to create a homely space for travellers to have a cultural experience and get engage in community initiatives and share their experience of their travel experience and learning with students and the fee they pay us part of their stay a portion goes to support community initiative ie. Literacy initiative in destitute schools, outreach workshops, providing stationery for students etc.
6. How did the idea of Volta home away from home and Wakeup Campaign come about?
I was inspired to get to know of Wakeup Campaign founded by Viviane Williams. Viviane was one of my volunteers during her volunteer experience in Ghana very passionate driven person. We reconnected after so many years when I also started my community outreach initiatives to give back in my community. I am passionate about working with local grassroots. Viviane and I have a lot in common, we both believe in promoting global citizenship through volunteering, building sustainable community projects in partnership with grassroots community members and organisation. We decided to partner on this starting from Ghana to continue contributing to be the change we want to see in the world because we believe change is possible through community outreach.
7. What does being a change make mean to you?
Empowering people to be self-sufficient – teaching them how to fish and not giving them fish all the time.
8. Where do you see Ghana is 5 years from now?
My hope is more Ghanaian students in very rural/destitute communities would have access to good education i.e. stationaries and able to read and write.
9. What can we do to help develop Ghana?
More Literacy outreach initiative to rural and destitute communities.
